    • Is not disclosing nitrous cheating? TPG Tuning fails to mention nitrous in their 'record' runs

If a tuner fails to mention they used nitrous on their record run, are they cheating? We know tuning is a competitive atmosphere and tuners do not want to reveal what they are doing to get an advantage. Not revealing a second power adder though seems dishonest.

Do you all remember when TPG Tuning touted the first 9-second BMW S55 1/4 mile run in their F82 M4 back in 2017? This is what they listed as their modifications:

      TPG Tuning built
      Pure Turbos
      Fuel-It port injection
      Dodson Motorsports DCT upgrade
      Sheptrans
      Burger Motorsports
      HC Performance - Halim Cazimi
      Driveshaft Shop
      Evolution of Speed
      Fathouse Fabrications
      P&R Engine

What's missing? Oh, the big shot of nitrous.

Now the only reason to omit mentioning the nitrous is to make it seem like their skills are greater than they are. That they are doing something special which makes them faster when really all it happens to be is squeezing giggle juice and hoping the motor holds together.

One time may be an outlier. How about doing it twice? TPG Tuning also claimed the first 10-second MKV Supra. Again they did not disclose using nitrous to do it. This time everyone (including this site) called them out:

TPG Tuning was asked directly about the nitrous and skirted the question:

There is a big difference between running 9's boost only and with nitrous. By omitting nitrous it implies the tuning and turbo is what got you there.

If all that matters is who gets there first, why test swimmers or sprinters for performance enhancing drugs? Why care about steroids setting the MLB home run record? Because how you get there matters and cheating is cutting corners.

Reputable tuners disclose their mods and yes, not mentioning nitrous is cheating.

Not sure why people don't disclose it if used. It's a valid form of performance improvement - just own it: I will still think the same of a shop that has a 9 second build turbo/supercharger only vs. a 9 second car with nitrous.

I agree, but this seems like they intentionally hid it to make it seem like they had some breakthrough in tuning that no one else did. I’m that case, that’s super unethical.

I wouldn't consider it cheating unless they're competing under a specific set of class rules that forbids it. Likewise on the ethical front, it's not like they're selling that exact listed package claiming it can do X but in fact really requires package + NOS, the fact the new owner gets to find out exactly what was done says as much.

The analogy to athlete PED use is wrong, those people are knowingly competing in leagues that expressly forbids it's use and are skirting the rules; In that case yes it is cheating.

Did TPG actually claim something that was proven to be false? As far as I've seen all they've claimed is X time with Y chassis using Z engine, nothing more.

lol unless they outright lied, kinda hard to fault them for what they did.

If you use a big shot, claim it. If you use a small shot for something like spool. Then I dont mind keeping it to yourself. I knew there was no chance those pures were making that kind of power

That's the unethical part. Other people bought turbos thinking they would run 9's and I wonder how many didn't get close and push their turbos way too far in the process?

I don't think they ever even said how much. Lame.

Weird. I wonder if he actually did without mentioning it. If you use it, gotta post it with results. It's an unspoken law in my opinion!
